چکیده

We report a first-order phase transition at TM=357 K in single crystal Ca2RuO4, an isomorph to the superconductor Sr2RuO4. The discontinuous decrease in electrical resistivity signals the near d e struction of the Mott insulating phase and is triggered by a s t ructural transition from the low temperature orthorhombic to a high temperature tetragonal phase. The magnetic susceptibility, which is temperature dependent but not Curie-like decreases abruptly at TM and becomes less temperature dependent. Unlike most insulator t o metal transitions, the system is not magnetically ordered in e i ther phase, though the Mott insulator phase is antiferromagnetic below TN=110 K.

The Mott-Hubbard transition and the paramagnetic insulating state in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

– The Mott-Hubbard transition is studied in the context of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Analytical calculations show the existence of a critical value Uc of the potential strength which separates a paramagnetic metallic phase from a paramagnetic insulating phase. Calculations of the density of states and double occupancy show that the ground state in the insulating phase contains always a...

A surface-tailored, purely electronic, mott metal-to-insulator transition.

Mott transitions, which are metal-insulator transitions (MITs) driven by electron-electron interactions, are usually accompanied in bulk by structural phase transitions. In the layered perovskite Ca(1.9)Sr(0.1)RuO4, such a first-order Mott MIT occurs in the bulk at a temperature of 154 kelvin on cooling. In contrast, at the surface, an unusual inherent Mott MIT is observed at 130 kelvin, also o...

Volume-wise destruction of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state through quantum tuning

RENiO3 (RE=rare-earth element) and V2O3 are archetypal Mott insulator systems. When tuned by chemical substitution (RENiO3) or pressure (V2O3), they exhibit a quantum phase transition (QPT) between an antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state and a paramagnetic metallic state. Because novel physics often appears near a Mott QPT, the details of this transition, such as whether it is first or secon...

We study the quantum phase transition between a band (“ionic”) insulator and a Mott-Hubbard insulator, realized at a critical value U = Uc in a bipartite Hubbard model with two inequivalent sites, whose on-site energies differ by an offset ∆. The study is carried out both in D = 1 and D = 2 (square and honeycomb lattices), using exact Lanczos diagonalization, finitesize scaling, and Berry’s pha...

2 00 6 Phase diagram of the one dimensional Hubbard - Holstein Model at 1 / 2 and 1 / 4 filling

The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling, the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes onsite pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge density wave, while the Hubbard onsite Coulomb repulsion U promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical st...
